Referral Credits Contest and reporting

Asked on May 26, 2017 in Marketing.

Hey there,

We would like to give our users a contest where they win a prize for the most shares of our app in a particular period.  So for example we will send out information to our users saying if they refer the most people between June 1 and June 29 they will win a $100 visa gift card.

Is there a report in branch.io that would tell us who, between june 1 and June 29 referred and caused the most installs of our app of new users?

You could use the following technique to understand how many users a particular user referred into your app:

1. Before you create a referral link to drive installs, please set the referring user’s identity via a call to setIdentity(). Information about this call can be found at:
2. Once that is done, setup a referral rule on the install event to give the referring user some credits. You can read about how to set that up over at:
You’ll want to setup the rule for “Referring users” and the amount can be 1 unit.

3. Also, once a new user signs up, for completeness sake, you should set the referred user’s identity via a call to setIdentity(“”) as well.

In general, you should make this call anytime a user logs in or creates an account.

With steps 1 – 3 integrated correctly, you can use the following API to understand how many people a particular user referred due to the referral rule in step 2 being triggered:
Hope that helps!

Hi there,   Thanks for this!   Two questions and also maybe a suggestion for a documentation update.

https://dev.branch.io/marketing-channels/referral-programs/guide/android/?search=referring+acting+user#awarding-credits

All Acting Users
Referring Users – The person who shared the link with someone else.
Referred Acting Users

Can you please tell me what an acting user is?

My other question is regarding “First Time”.  In the link above to the help file it says:

Rule 2: rewarding the referring user 5 credits
Who gets a reward: “Referring users”
How many credits the reward is: 5
Which bucket the credits go to: default
Whether the reward occurs the first time or every time: the first time
Which event triggers the reward: install

When you say first time for Rule 2 doesn’t that mean that if the user shares the link to 10 people and all 10 install that they will only get 5 credits because the rule runs on the the first time the install event runs.   Or does that mean the reward will be given 10 times but if one of those referred users uninstall and re-install a few times it will only give the initial 5 credits?

Thanks!

Ah, I answered my second question after creating the rule…   After you create the rule the description says “Referring users get 1 2017SumSweep credits the first time users they’ve referred trigger the event install”

I would suggest updating the initial create window somehow to show the same wording that the description shows after I created the rule.

There are three types of users with the referrals:

All Acting Users – ??
Referring Users – The person who shared the link with someone else.
Referred Acting Users – ??

Can you please tell me what the definitions of “All acting users” and “Referred Acting Users” are?

Thanks!

‘All acting users’ are users who opened the app whereas ‘Referred acting users’ are users who opened the app by clicking on a Branch link.
