How do I make a deferred deep link for when the user doesn’t have the app installed

Hey guys I have a web page I put together for a clothing business contest. The thing is there is a deeplinking problem with the code. I want to be able to use deferred deeplinking to make the WhatsApp link redirect mobile users to the app store and download it in the case that the person clicks the link and doesn’t have the app yet. How do I do this though? I know nothing about deferred deeplinking. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Trying to get this fixed as soon as humanly possible.

Hi there! Deferred deep linking is indeed what you need here, but there is one rather important caveat: it needs to be implemented by the target app. Unfortunately WhatsApp hasn’t done this, and there is no easy way for you to do it on your own in a cross-platform compatible way. Are you targeting both iOS and Android users?

Hi Alex,

I appreciate your response. Yes I’m targeting both iOS and Android users, I want to keep the highest amount of people possible from getting an error message when they don’t have the app.

Preferably I would’ve switched out deeplinking to the user’s text messages or contacts list, but I’m not sure if that’s possible yet or how to do it.

So deferred deep linking is only possible to do if either the app makers somehow integrate it into their mobile app, or you create your own app and do it? Is that correct?

Your goal absolutely makes sense — that’s why deferred deep linking is so effective! You are correct though: it is only possible if the app maker integrates it or if you are the one creating the app.

Using text messages might be an option though! You can trigger this on both iOS and Android with the sms:// URL scheme: read more about that here.

Alex,

Whoah thank you Alex, I just figured out the code to make someone open their text messages automatically with a deeplink. I’ll just switch the WhatsApp deeplink out with the text message one.
