Hi Liz, thanks so much for doing the GrowthChat! I was at a meetup on Tuesday night in LA and the subject of onboarding was top of mind for the community. One question that came up – how can you tell a new onboarding flow is working? What metrics do you use to measure the success?

When I first joined LinkedIn, I remember being almost shocked at the accuracy of the ‘you might know this person’ recommendations. Even now, after several years of growing my network, almost every name there is someone I do in fact know, but it seems like many of these accounts never saw much attention after they were first created. Is that part of an intentional effort to leverage existing active users to help bring back inactive users? If so, how to campaigns like that stack up against more traditional reactivation approaches?

First time in an app – onbording someone and showing them what the app can do vs. taking them to the content they came for – for example a user profile – what works best?

Might be super-specific, but the pros and cons of letting a user set a username during registration vs just defaulting their username to their email and letting them change it later? Making them set a username is one more step and then you have to check against the total list of usernames.
