Jeffrey Storey, Slickdeals LLC

Jeffrey Storey is currently a Director of Mobile Product for Slickdeals LLC, the largest deal-sharing community on the web, with extensive product background in both mobile (apps and web) and desktop experiences. In 2015 he led a full redesign and re-architecture of Slickdeal’s iOS and Android apps as well as a full mobile web implementation ‘from scratch’ prior to Google’s mobile algorithm update. An intuitive user-experience oriented product professional, he is experienced in all aspects of mobile and desktop products, using agile, iterative and data-driven methodology to form decisions (with a pinch of intuition thrown in).

Prior to product roles in dot com, he served as a consultant and designer with a background in music, television, publishing, and entertainment industries. His clients have included MTV, Bravo, Oxygen Networks, Shangri-La Music, FuseTV, J.P. Morgan Chase, and more. His experience includes a diverse range of services covering all aspects of online creative production process, from initial design process to launch, including strategy, project management, and technical issues.

Prior to consulting, Storey directed West Coast online production for Sony Music for 7+ years, managing a team of 8-12 designers, and was Executive Producer for a number of high profile campaigns, including Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam, Celine Dion, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Incubus, System of a Down and many others.

In addition to design and creative management, he specializes in search engine optimization for high profile personalities and celebrities.

He holds a B.A. in Psychological Anthropology from UCLA, graduating summa cum laude, phi beta kappa. He is an avid soccer player, guitarist, and aficianado of Russian literature, history, and music.

From a user experience perspective and wanting to capture a user on the first try, what are your thoughts on having a tutorial for an app vs. getting the user to explore it on their own? And is there a line on too much showing vs. letting users look around?

Hi Jeff, can you discuss some of the thought process you followed and what lead to your decisions when rebuilding the SD app, on app navigation design. By that I mean you chose to stay within traditional iOS guidelines with tabbed navigation on the bottom and the “more” overflow. However with Android you went with a newer (in terms of Material standards) and less tried top tabbed navigation over the traditional Hamburger menu (I know the Hamburger menu is a hot button for many) and overflow menu.
