App store optimization is hard but has a huge upside. What are some of the best practices

ASO is somewhat similar to SEO. 

SEO is done to get our websites on the front pages of search engines,similar ASO for our apps.

Sharing my persnol experience, the name of the App must contain the basic use of the app i.e. if its a taxi booking app, the name can go like “Company Name- Book Cab on the Go” or something like that. 

Second thing is the description which we provide. Use as many keywords as possible but do not try to overfill as it might be considered as a spam.

Third are the screens of the app. Screens should be attractive as they only catch the attention of potential users. (http://www.partiko.com/) Check the background image, hope it will make my point clear.

Then comes the Ratings and the reviews. Try to get keyword rich reviews and decent ratings. Initially you will need the help of your personal network but once you reach a decent landmark of downloads, organic works well!

But still keywords are key for ASO. Identify the best keywords.

Quite a huge topic.

I do have basic stuff on ASO and App Marketing, but you’ll find them quite everywhere. What you won’t find / advanced stuff is here, and for ASO it’s in the “ASO / Hack ASO” part: http://fr.slideshare.net/AlexandreJubien/growth-hacking-for-apps-50315361

In particular:

  • Icon is much important, can tap into emotional design
  • So are first sentences of description
  • Add keywords in name of app
  • Marketing screenshots is maybe the most important thing in ASO. The 1st thing I do in an ASO audit is to look if it’s done properly. Is there proper marketing included?
  • Text for update – plz, avoid “Bug solved”, and use it as a marketing opportunity. “We continue to improve the app and we value the great feedback that you provide us. Please continue to do so! In this version, …”. But some startups are here really really creative.
  • AppStore Proxy: You can do A/B testing on your app store assets / see in the slides
  • And the best of all, you can hack ratings. In the slides too, much important hack.

Forgot 1 thing: Localizing assets, including screenshots is much important. At Viadeo, we had our app in Spanish but published first with screenshots in english. Daily downloads grew by 30% when we put screenshots in spanish!!!

I agree with most points mentioned above. 

a. Screenshots are not just to show your product, to tell a user narrative. Use of actual user images, interaction scenarios, use cases – all lead to more installs. Also, explains the user what to do post the install

b. Inserting Keywords in App name is a huge boost. For e.g. for my last company – an internship platform, when we launched as Letsintern ( our company and website name) on the Indian Play Store, we were nowhere on key search terms but when we did “Letsintern: Internships on Tap” – we suddenly started ranking better on all relevant keywords to internship and slowly climbed to no.1 

c. Also, companies should focus on getting their latest versions rated ASAP ( have a list of 10 friends for each version ready to review within 1st hour). Ratings affect download decisions a lot.  

d. Size of app: In India and asian countries with cheaper android phones dominating 80% of the market, size of the app is important information points for users to decide to download or not – they have limited storage.

hard? ASO is not hard… It’s just a game 🙂

If you are not able to create a “viral” app, ASO could be expensive.

ASO, like some people commented before, is similar to SEO, but different. ASO = Keyword ranking, Top Chart rankings, conversion rate.

Some best practices:

  • Put keywords in your app name / title
  • Find the best icon + feature graphic + screenshots in order to get the highest CR (Conversion Rate)
  • Get tons of positive ratings (your product has to be good)
  • Monitor your competitors: keywords, top charts, etc.

And remember: ASO is not only Search.

The process is easy but accurate….

It also includes an analysis of the graphic fields and a proposal of Screenshots for the chart, updated with the new trends raised by the Google Play and AppStore guidelines. Once the audit exercise is completed, a Reporting maintenance and monthly change proposal is proposed.

Hi friends, as we all know that, App Store Optimization is the process of improving the visibility of an App in App store, including the process of ranking highly in an app store’s search results and top charts rankings. Here are some tips about how to do ASO.

 

  • Keywords

The first thing you have to do is to find out which keywords define your app and which ones are going to bring traffic to your app store listing. Find the hot words in the field of you app, which once put it in the search box, you app can be searched easily in the app store. And analyze your competitors’ hot words, then build your own hot words bank. Do not waste any characters, and you don’t need to add a comma between the words.

  • App title

A good app title can not only help to attract users attention, it can gain market in ASO. Please pay attention that do not only put words together, also make the statement smoothly, and if the words appear in the keywords, you should not put it in the app title

  • App icon

This is not useful for search optimization, but it is useful for the conversion rate of download. Beautiful or cool icon absolutely attract more users to download the app. So make a well-designed icon.

  • App description

This is also not useful for search optimization, but when a user consider if download this app or not, they will have a look at the description of you app, so make the description with an attractive copywriting.

  • App screenshots and videos

Like app icon, using attractive screenshots to show the advantages of your app. And make a short video to show the function of your app.

  • Reviews and ratings

There are some researches show that 70% users download an app after see the reviews, the higher rating your app get, the more download you can get. Imagine yourself as a users, would you like to download the app with much 2/3 ratings? You can find your friends and relatives’ help to write some positive reviews for you, or find some reliable companies to buy app reviews and buy app ratings from real users.
